The political values in America have contributed a lot in shaping political institutions. However, the relationship is rather abnormal since both of them have played a significant role in shaping each other. The American political values come from generally accepted ideas of equality and liberty.

Although political values have been received, they are viewed and interpreted differently. These different political views have been shaping American political institutions for quite long. Public opinions have formed the strongest form of influence on political institutions since the people have a right to expression during and after elections. Public views have kept the three arms of the government in check now more than ever given the revolution of social media. Politicians, who form the largest part of political institutions, rely on public opinions to make proper decisions that are appealing to the public. Some presidents such as Richard Nixon and Franklin D. Roosevelt have accepted that they at times relied on public opinions to make decisions.

However, the public does not have complete information regarding politics, and that makes some politicians fail to subscribe to public views.

On the other hand, political institutions have also played a role in shaping political values and views of the general public. The institution of the president is very vital in shaping public opinions. Given that presidents are directly elected by a majority, they use this power handed to them to enforce their beliefs on the public rather than relying on public opinions to make policies. The extent of this influence depends on the strength of the institution.

The relationship between public opinions and political institutions will continue to shape each other even in the coming generations.
