Human beings tend to shy away from difficult conversations unless when they do not have a choice. Friends, families, and even coworkers find it hard to talk about sensitive issues, and they would rather sweep them under the rug. Susan Scott’s Fierce Conversation argues that we experience interpersonal difficulties because of our inability to communicate well, especially about the difficult issues.
According to Susan Scott, the purposes of fierce communication are: interrogate reality, provoke learning, tackle tough challenges, and enrich relationships (Scott, 2004). The four purposes encourage us to engage in deep conversation about issues rather than simple conversations that fail to address everything. Achieving the four purposes of fierce communication can be challenging since we live in a culture where people prefer superficial conversations.

This week, I tried to apply the four purposes of fierce conversation to my communication. When conversing with my friends, I interrogated reality by asking the difficult questions that we often ignore. For example, while engaging in the normal past time conversation with friends about other friends and current events, I challenged the way we usually converse by asking about motivations and reasons behind certain actions. I encouraged my friends to seek out motivations behind certain events before judging others so that they can get a full picture of the reality. I learned that we must acknowledge the different perspectives as to why people act in certain ways rather than judging them from our point of view.
Fierce conversations also enrich relationships. In the past week, I learned to listen more to appreciate what my friends are talking about instead of interrupting them to chime in with meaningless information. In conclusion, fierce conversation principles have enabled me to challenge reality, learn more about individuals and events, and enrich relationships.
