2012 Study

In the 2012 study, the authors used qualitative analysis to conduct the research. Four focus groups whose members were between the ages of 13 to 24 were recruited from an urban clinic’s community outreach center (Martin, Houston, MMari, and Decker, 2012). It was discovered that the term ‘relationship drama’ had a wide range of meanings. Also, teens prefer seeking informal help first (friends and family) before turning to formal help. To them, the preferable resource center is safe and confidential with non-judgmental and compassionate staff. The strength of this study is that it was intensive. One weakness is that it used few participants, and they were all from a single outreach center.

2015 Study

In the 2015 study, the authors used qualitative analysis. They used focus groups (64 members divided into 20 groups) and carried out an online survey among 305 participants (Rueda, Williams, & Nagoshi, 2015). They found out that family and friends were the primary sources of help against dating violence for teens. They also found out that fear was the most prominent barrier for seeking help against dating violence for teens. The researchers discovered that help-pursuing was considered a flaw, and help-proposing was kept for those who requested it. The strength of this study is that it used a large and diverse set of participants. One weakness is that it was not exhaustive.

The most notable similarity between these studies was that they both used qualitative analysis. In addition, they both used focus groups. The 2012 study used four focus groups, while the 2015 study used 20 focus groups.

The 2012 study found that teens have an extensive variety of denotations for the word ‘relationship drama’ while in the 2015 study, the researchers discovered that fear is the most significant barrier to seeking help for teens.
