The reasons why people quit their job may be under the control of the employer or at times from events in an employee’s world outside the work environment. However, many reasons emanate within the work environment. Such reasons include a difficult work environment, unavailable opportunities for employees to apply their inherent skills and abilities, and lack of additional compensation ( Heathfield, 2015) . A difficult work environment may result from toxic work relationships between employees with co-workers or bosses. A negative work environment undermines one’s engagement, confidence, and commitment, thus making it difficult for an employee to dispense his or her duties efficiently.

Employees also prefer a job that will accord them the opportunity to stretch their abilities and skills. Therefore, if employees are not able to participate in activities that will help develop and grow their skills in their present jobs, they are likely to find one where they can grow their careers. It is also common for employees to when they feel that the compensation they receive is far way too little compared to their contribution towards the success of the organization. Employees prefer working in an organization that recognized their contribution and job performance. A lack of recognition either by failing to increase their salaries may influence an employee’s decision to quit ( Heathfield, 2015)

Some of the reasons outside the work environment that make employees quit their work include illness, going back to school, and relocation ( Heathfield, 2015) . Some chronic illnesses can make an employee incapacitated, thus unable to perform the duties in their job positions. Therefore, being ill is a legitimate reason an employee may quit his or her job. In pursuit of greener pastures, employees may decide to go back to school either on a part-time or full-time basis. The school schedule and employees' current job may not align, thereby making one quit. At times, people may find the need to relocate to a new city or town to either stay close to family members. In such a case, one may have to quit their job unless the company provides an opportunity to work remotely.
