I agree with Thoreus’ idea that it is a duty for all Americans to resist unjust laws. In a government with a constitution and existing democratic policies, I believe that the people have a right to air their views and object to rules that affect their freedom. The government's use of force to men in paying taxes while struggling to make ends meet is unacceptable. I think it shows how controlling a government is to its people and yet unjustly enslaves society.” I did not see why the schoolmaster should be taxed to support the priest, and not the priest the schoolmaster; for I was not the State’s schoolmaster” I agree that honest men have a responsibility to refuse allegiance in a society that a large part of the population are slaves and the country is run in unjust ways. The government should exist to improve its people's lives, and it is of no importance if it causes suffering to the same people who are the reason for its existence. The unwillingness to question situations is evident in where Fortunato does not question Montresor, who was in a quest for vengeance (Poe 2008). Due to his weakness of being silent, he met his downfall, which will be the case with citizens who do not question injustices from their civil government.
There should be boundaries between a state and the citizens in a country. Every individual should be accorded the rights they deserve without the assertion of oppression laws on the people. The civil government should stick to ensure justice for all the people. According to Thoreau, citizens should “cheerfully obey those who know and can do better," therefore respect the government and support it any way they can willingly ( Thoreau 2016) . However, the state should also recognize the power of a country’s citizens since it is through the people that it is accorded authority. There should be mutual respect from both sides so that the country can move forward. Therefore, the people's oppression of citizens by its government, even with democratic governance, calls for a revolution, and the citizens have a right and duty to resist such a government.
