The nervous system in the body has the responsibility to ensure breathing in normal and abnormal conditions. Under normal circumstances, the nervous system is designed to control breathing by sending signals to the diaphragm and intercostal tissues to contract and relax at systematic intervals (Chourpiliadis & Bhardwaj, 2019). The automatic nervous system comprises of two main parts, the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic division is responsible for fight or flight responses. When one holds their breath, the rate of oxygen will reduce while carbon dioxide will increase.. A high concentration of carbon dioxide gas affects the rate of blood supply and the normal functioning of the body.

Summarily, respiration is an essential activity in the body. This is because it plays many roles that integrate to aid the body in its function. In the case of my nephew, holding up his breath will negatively affect the standard functioning of his body. It is, therefore, advised to avoid holding of breath as it may lead to health problems.
