This site defines rhetoric as the study of written language in its spoken, visual and written forms. It is therefore a very wide subject examining the use of language in various contexts and settings and the dynamics that affect communication. Various viewpoints are outlined on this website including those of famous scholars and philosophers who have studies the subject for more than two millennia in which it has existed. Some of the quoted scholars include Plato, Aristotle and Friedrich Nietzsche.

According to this website, there are three main avenues of persuasion, referred to as rhetorical appeals, namely Logos, Ethos and Pathos . While it is important to use all three appeals in order to achieve maximum persuasion, Logos is the most important appeal. Logos attempts to convince the audience based on rationality according to the available facts, Ethos attempts to convince based on the authority or credibility carried by the presenter while Pathos appeals to the audience’s emotions. These appeals are further discussed on the site. The site also includes links to an audio recording and an online video explaining the same concepts.

This article defines a rhetorical situation as the context in which a rhetorical act occurs. It is made up of the person causing it, the medium and the issue. These are the minimum requirements for a rhetorical situation. However, a rhetorical situation may be difficult to identify and analyze, and this article offers approaches that may be used towards this purpose. A rhetorical context may for instance be reconstructed by determining the subject being addressed, the purpose of the writer, the audience and the causative situational factors that influenced the texts presentation.
