Part 1

Research Topic: Risk Factors for Pilot Deaths during Airplane Crash Landings

Research Objective: The objective of the study will be to identify the factors related to deaths of pilots in general aviation aircraft crash landings.

Research Questions

Does airplane explosion on the ground cause pilot fatalities during a plane crash landing?

Does the failure to use both shoulder harness and lap belt likely to cause pilot death during a plane crash landing?

Variables

Independent variables

Airplane explosion

Use of shoulder harness and lap belt

Dependent Variable

Pilot Fatalities

Type of data: The data that this research will use is discrete data. Discrete data is that which can only take on specific values.

Part 2

Variables

Independent variables

Airplane explosion

Use of shoulder harness and lap belt

Dependent Variable

Pilot Fatalities

Hypotheses

Null Hypothesis 1 : Airplane explosion on the ground causes pilot fatalities during a plane crash landing.

Alternative Hypothesis1: Airplane explosion on the ground does not cause pilot fatalities during a plane crash landing.

Null Hypothesis 2: The failure to use both shoulder harness and lap belt is likely to cause pilot death during a plane crash landing.

Alternative Hypothesis 2: The failure to use both shoulder harness and lap belt is not likely to cause pilot death during a plane crash landing.

Data Analysis Technique

For this study, content analysis, grounded theory and descriptive statistics, will be used to analyze the data collected. Content analysis is among the most common techniques for analyzing qualitative data. It is utilized for analyzing documented data in the form of texts, media or physical records. Grounded theory, on the other hand, is the use of qualitative data to describe why a specific phenomenon occurred. It does this through studying different similar cases in various settings and using the data for deriving causal explanations. Descriptive statistics is used for describing the basic features study data. It helps the research in summarizing the data and finding patters. For this study, percentage, frequency and mean are the descriptive statistics that will be used.

Essentially, this study will be both qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research is mainly fundamentally exploratory research. It is utilized for gaining an understanding of primary motivations, reasons and opinions. It offers insights into the issue of aids in developing concepts or theories for possible quantitative research. Conversely, quantitative research is useful for quantifying the research problem through creating statistical data or data which may be converted into usable figures ( Silvey, 2017) . It is employed for quantifying behaviors, ideas, attitudes and other definite variables – and for generalizing outcomes from a larger population sample. While this research will be exploratory in nature – exploring the risk factors which cause fatalities among pilots during plane crash landings – the study will be also quantitative as it will involve data collection from longitudinal studies.

Statistical Tests

For the qualitative data, a hypothesis test will be used. Hypothesis test is a test which describes a process which controls the likelihood of wrongly determining that a null hypothesis is wrong subject to how possibly various observations will happen, assuming that the null hypothesis was correct ( Greenland et al., 2016) . For the quantitative data, a t-test will be used. A t-test is a statistical test for numerical whereby the test statistic uses a t distribution when the null hypothesis is true.
