The aim of the article selected was to discuss the religious influence of the church evangelicals in electing Donald Trump. The article also explores other historical concepts regarding the history of the church and its relationship with the political system. The first concept similar to the coursework that was observed by Martí (2019) was the reason why Donald Trump received overwhelming support from the church. While Donald Trump was not a devout a Christ, Evangelical supporters defended their choice of electing him by stating that they were not electing a pastor but a president. The author observed that most Evangelicals had felt that their interests were excluded from the Obama presidency with their religious convictions being under attack. Trump thus gained support among the Evangelicals because of his willingness to enforce his Christian convictions when elected president.
The second concept identified is the role that the church has played in defining various ideologies of the state. Martí (2019) observed how phrases like “In God We Trust” were inscribed in the currency and the halls of congress and phrases like “under God” were placed in classrooms and the Pledge of Allegiance. All these phrases were placed by a group of White Christians. While there is an assumption of the separation between the church and state, religion was found to have a significant influence in the State.

The third concept identified is how the Evangelicals participated in striving to enforce laws like being against same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, and nontraditional gender roles. Martí (2019) observed that there has been an overwhelming shift in the Evangelical culture with less legal struggles against and gay marriage. The shift has been caused by their frustrations of not being able to make a sense of the religious decline in the modern world. The author observes that the role of the church has changed and shifted from legal struggles to becoming an authoritative force that establishes behavioral guidelines through political officials that will shape policies and interpret laws. Policy has become what matters most for most evangelicals.
