According to history, Medusa was at one point a beautiful priestess of Athena that was cursed for breaking her promise of staying a celibate. She broke the vow when she had an affair with the sea god, Poseidon and was punished by Athena (Regula, 2019). Athena changed Medusa into a hideous hag; her hair was turned into writhing snakes, while the color of her skin turned greenish blue. Rosenthal, a German manufacturer of porcelain items, has currently used the Medusa icon on its products to show the beauty, fragility (delicate beauty), and the high quality of these products.

The website https://www.rosenthal.de/en/medusa-1-en/ displays a variety of porcelain products, and particularly plates. These plates have colorful patterns in circular forms, and the overall theme of Medusa is displayed in the form of an image at the center. The patterns mimic floral shapes with a few images of women, most probably Medusa. In this theme, Rosenthal picks the image of Medusa to represent beauty and aesthetics. From history, the image of a woman has in most instances represented delicate beauty, and that it should be revered. For Rosenthal, Medusa represents that ideal beauty, which should be used on all its porcelain items.

Porcelain materials are always delicate, and there seems to be a deliberate attempt for Rosenthal to use the image of Medusa to portray this aspect. The porcelain materials are beautiful and definitely, different from other company’s products. Presumably, Rosenthal seems to suggest that when customers buy the porcelain products, they will also be purchasing unique pieces of art, inspired by the Roman priestess, Medusa. The porcelain materials are not just supposed to be used for serving meals, but can be displayed and stored for their aesthetics.
