The Sea Inside

The director portrayed conflicts in play, The Sea Inside, through politics. The film captures legal appeals advanced by Ramon to all levels of courts in Spain. Ramon was seeking legal advance to terminate his life honorably after suffering an accident that left him disabled. His unwavering desire to commit suicide stays in limbo for three decades as he advances his interests (Amenabar, 2004). The conflict manifests in his determination to justify the need for euthanasia to the courts. In an attempt to garner huge amounts of sympathy, conflicts, and nuances manifest within debates.

Euthanasia has been, and still is, a controversial topic in Spain. At the time of creating the film, Euthanasia was a cultural and religious issue. Some people, including religious priests, were opposing euthanasia while other people had sought legal counsel to legalize the act (Amenabar, 2004). The heated debate and controversial discussions regarding the issue of Euthanasia in Spain inspired the creation of the movie.

Mid-August Lunch (2008)

The director portrays the stages of life Mid-August Lunch through society’s expected responsibilities and normalcy in regards to the performance of care. Gianni, a man who is in his mid-sixties but still lives with his elderly mother, Marina finds himself in a financial morass where he owes the building owner, Luigi some money for rent. Luigi forces him into the societally expected stipulation that a relatively mid-aged person should be capable of taking care of the elderly (Gregorio & Garrone, 2008). Consequently, he finds himself taking care of the needs of four elderly women, three of which are unknown to him, with a deal that Luigi scraps off the debt that he owns him. The film affirms normalcy in the stipulation that a person in the mid-sixties should take care of their mid-nineties relatives, but not the other way round.

The perceived culture and history of the country where the film was set influenced the choice of the title, the setting, and the progression of events. The director set the film in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome where the main character is abandoned for the Ferragosto holiday of August 15th. The celebration set for August 15th originates from times of the Roman and is also in coincidence with the feast of the Catholics called the Assumption of Mary. Everyone is normally off to the beach or the mountains celebrating the festivities. Similarly, Luigi follows suit, leaving his home in pursuit of the festivities while grounding Gianni with a punishment staying at home and taking care of his mum to service the existent debt (Gregorio & Garrone, 2008). Even though the director did not explain the holiday, the title is a reflection of the month of the year with food as an important cultural aspect of the Italians.
