Same-sex marriage has been widely debated globally and over a long time. In the US, it was a hot button issue until its legalization in June 2015, when the US Supreme court lifted the bans on same-sex marriages, legalizing it in all fifty states. After the long struggle, the legalization was a relief and a significant step forward for all and a sign of respect for human rights.

Gay marriage does not render the meaning of marriage weak. "Love has no gender - compassion has no religion - character has no race." were the utterances of Abhijit Naskar, a celebrated author and neuroscientist on a treatise on homosexuality. Love is love and regardless of the gender one chooses their partner from should be able to celebrate the union and live their lives like traditional couples enjoying all the benefits. For example, same-sex couples raise 4% of all adopted children in foster care giving them a chance to grow up in loving and warm homes.

Same-sex marriages will positively impact the economy. Through consumer spending, a total of $2.5 billion will be infused into the local economies through wedding expenses. "In 2015, marriage is not the same prerequisite to homeowners that it once was. Married couples are still more likely to own homes than other people," says Giacomo Santangelo, the economist who adds that legalization of marriage would further beef up the economy through homes purchases and hence was the best thing for the US ("What Marriage Equality Would Mean For The Economy," 2019).

Lastly, same-sex marriage recognition in America brought to an end the sidelined rights to benefits that gay couples used to suffer. For instance, in the case of United States v. Edith Windsor, the latter almost got her request to be exempted from paying tax as a widow turned down simply because she had been married to a woman. Luckily, the Supreme Court judges ruled in her favor, a case that practically redefined the DOMA marriage meaning. Further, recognition of same-sex marriages allows the couples to enjoy the payroll taxes that come with many employee spousal benefits such as estates and gifts taxes as well as income tax and it will impact the government revenue (Thomas, 2016).

In sum, the same marriage is deemed a controversial topic but its legalization in the US marked new dawn by ending struggles gay couples were going through by having them lose the natural-born rights that all humans deserve.
