Schizophrenia was initially used in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler, a Swiss psychiatrist who built on the ideas of premature dementia by Dr. Emil Kraeplin. The word schizophrenia was coined from the Greek language, whose translation means the ‘splitting of mind’ (Living with Schizophrenia, 2016) . Bleuler coined this term as he noticed mental illness was not ideally the same as dementia as some of his patients were getting healthier rather than deteriorating. Schizophrenia was believed to be a mental illness that troubles humankind for generations. Such is evidenced by written documents that trace Schizophrenia in ancient Egypt and also a millennium before Christ.

Persons whose families have a trait of Schizophrenia may be at risk (Psychiatry, n.d). Moreover, persons who may have experienced pregnancy complications may have various mental illnesses like Schizophrenia. Besides, persons who may have suffered from childhood trauma such as the death of a parent or sexual abuse may be at risk of Schizophrenia (Psychiatry, n.d). Diagnosis of Schizophrenia is made when a person suffers from bizarre delusions, disorganized speech, hallucinations, and disorganized behaviors such as unpredictable emotional responses (NIMH, n.d). Moreover, a person may exhibit negative symptoms such as lack of interest, pleasure, and emotional expressions. Schizophrenia can be treated through medication, which helps to decrease psychotic symptoms like delusions.

Treatment can be done through therapy, which helps the patient improve his life skills such as communication and stress management. Treatment can also be done by seeking social support from friends or family who help the patient get treatment and keep their symptoms in check (NIMH, n.d). The most effective way of treatment is a combination of medication, therapy, and social support. Many persons with Schizophrenia cannot maintain work, and most of the patient's social relationships are affected due to a lack of interest in them. My knowledge of Schizophrenia as a psychological disease has helped me understand that through improving our social skills, we can prevent Schizophrenia.
