Self-hypnosis is a process or a procedure in which an individual goes into a state of total awareness while meditation is a state of deep, profound peace that is as a result of silence and calmness in one’s mind but being completely alert.

Self-hypnosis and meditation are similar in the sense that both involve relaxation of both the mind and the body. The two also involves a specified focus or concentration in the mind. Another similarity between self-hypnosis and meditation is that both bring about a positive, stress free, calm and relaxed state of mind (Bolduc, 2000). Consistency in practicing either of the two also results to pleasant experiences, leading to more fulfilled and happier life.

Although self-hypnosis and meditation tend to overlap in so many ways, they also differ in various ways. The main difference being that self-hypnosis is done with a specific goal or rather a given end point in the mind for example to increase one’s confidence, to cope with stress, to overcome anxiety and fear, to develop preferred habits of eating, to ensure better sleep, to stop smoking or even to discover one’s inner wisdom (Bolduc, 2000). On the other hand, meditation has no specific goal to target at, only in its purest form. It means emptying of the mind completely, with the end results being a mind completely free of thoughts. Another difference between the two is that meditation mainly purposes on getting focused at the present moment while self-hypnosis aims at getting deeper into a state of concentration and awareness.

In conclusion, although self-hypnosis and meditations vary in various ways, in my opinion, whether you practice self-hypnosis or meditation, the end results will be similar to a greater extent.
