Creativity means merely the ability to come up with an idea. It is one's innovation of something. As people grow and as their cognitive development increases, they become more creative. People are creative in their form. Some have creativity in music, others arts, and others cooking. Creativity not only enriches one’s life but also it’s an advantage in any field one ventures. Creativity helps one perceive the world differently; it makes on find hidden patterns that may seem unrelated, connect them and come up with a solution. Creativity entails thinking and producing. Brook, (2005). states that being able to imagine something is more important than its knowledge as having something knowledge is somehow limited while imagining something has no limitations. Imaginations embrace the whole world.
During my pre-schooling, we used to be given drawing books and pencils where we were told to draw our surroundings. I remember during my preschool days I loved drawing my family members and color them according to one’s favorite color. I, therefore, had to know each person’s favorite color. I also used to paint some drawings on the walls or in the drawing books. I would also build small houses using banana leaves and branches. These creative activities made school fun, and I would not feel homesick. When I got to lower primary school, I started gaining interest in playing family games: My siblings and I would assume roles in the family where we would act as mother and father and children. I would make dolls and make them different clothes. I enjoyed imitating my mother whatever she did from cooking to cleaning. This observation made me gain these necessary skills by looking at what my mother did.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Sometimes my mother or my elder siblings would complain when I left the banana leaves outside claiming that they were making the environment dirty. The clothes that I used to dress my dolls were fabrics from my mother’s clothes, so she used to complain that I was misusing her fabrics. However, the response was not always negative. Sometimes I remember my mother would bring me more dolls and get me some fabrics to cloth them as long as I kept the house tidy. In school, we were given time for creativity although the time was limited. Class time dominated most of our time in school.
In school, especially high school, we had different creativity programs and contests that greatly promoted creativity. We were given a chance to come up with innovations that we would then go into competition with other students and the innovation that scored the highest mark would be awarded. Some of the innovations that students came up with were natural ways of preserving food using charcoal, recycling waste to make containers and also using beads and bottle tops to make earrings and other ornaments. This programs largely enhanced student’s creativity and was also a source of income as students would sell their final products. Also, there were times that teachers would bring motivational speakers to schools. Motivational speakers are usually role models in creative development Starko, (2018).
Time spent in being creative reduced as we grew older. We had more books to read, and education was becoming more tasking. Therefore we had to focus most of our time in books. We also had other responsibilities at home, assisting parents with home chores. This added responsibilities limited the time to be creative. Also, the new technology has reduced our ability to creativity as some of this new technologies do almost everything for us.
Today, I am creative in my way. I have different ways of improving my creativity. Let’s say for instance if I read a book or watch a film, and I will try and reflect on either. Analyze it and try to derive and relate the book or film to my everyday life. This helps me change my perspective on things or even improve my way of living.
In addition to increasing my creativity today, I try to involve myself in different activities. As Sarsani, (2006), says, tell me, and I forget, teach me, and I may remember but involve me, and I will learn. I, therefore, believe that being involved in something is more important than just learning about it. Also, using different approaches when solving issues have helped me become creative. Anytime am faced with a problem, I will try and solve it using different approaches. I will have a plan A, B, and C. so that in case one fails; I will try out the other. Exposure increases one's creativity. I, therefore, try as much to increase my interaction with the social world as it makes me have a broad understanding of the world we live. Sharing ideas with others is an effective way of improving your creativity as well.
The notion that only talented individuals can be creative or only the bright can be creating limits our ability to be creative, Self-confidence is important when it comes to creativity. Everyone is creative in their way, therefore, believing in oneself is a necessary tool towards creativity. Exposure to the world also improves one's creativity. Being social and striving to learn different things every day will improve on creativity. Self-reflection and examination will also help in creativity. Also sharing ideas can improve one’s creativity. Learning from others will help gain knowledge about certain things that you were not aware. Creativity not only enhances our thinking capability but it can also be a source of income.
