The issue of gender discrimination and disparity has for long been an issue of discussion amongst the everyday American. People have mixed views concerning gender and sexuality, and this has brought about a lot of debate. President Obama made quite a bold move that shocked many people when he legalised same-sex marriage in the USA. This has been viewed as a taboo by not only the Christian community but also other religious groups (Hughes, 2016). It has, however, been a hard journey all along for the people who are sexually oriented to those of the same sex.
Joel Burns (2010) gave a very emotional speech at the City Council Meeting. He gave stories of some boys who had been bullied at school due to their sexual orientation. Some of them were just suspected to be gay, and this led to them eventually committing suicide. As Joel explains, these children took away their lives because of the kind of pressure and discrimination that they faced for being different. He criticised the society by saying that it cannot just accept people who are different (Burns, 2010).

The newly elected POTUS, Donald Trump, also came out to oppose same-sex marriages during his campaign. He, however, recently stated that he had no issues whatsoever with the issue only putting emphasis on the issue of abortion. Many conservatives who earlier on supported his quest for the presidency due to his stand on gay marriage found themselves in complete awe after that.
It might be legal now, but the world has not yet come to terms with it. People who come out as gay tend to be isolated from most people. They tend to feel like they are not appreciated and valued in the society, a feeling that could lower their self-esteem (Hughes, 2016).
Nevertheless, some prominent figures have come out to the public and exposed themselves as gay without being ashamed about it. Ellen DeGeneres of The Ellen Show is one such figure who openly speaks about her sex and is proud of it at all times. Another public shocker was made by Wentworth Miller, popularly known as Michael Scofield, from the FOX hit series ‘Prison Break’ when declared he confirmed his gay status. With this kind of recent developments, there is no knowing what the future holds regarding gay marriage. Perhaps the world will embrace it or maybe not.
