Students discipline is vital for academic excellence in any learning institution. Inculcating discipline should be the primary responsibility of the school principal. As the new principal in middle school, it will be my responsibility to establish a school culture that upholds discipline.
The initial step towards shaping the school culture is by carrying out a SWOT analysis of the school. For instance, the institution has a high student population and an excellent teacher to student ratio. On average, each teacher serves about 20 students which enhance teacher-student contact time. Also, the school has a special needs teacher as well as a gifted education teacher. The teaching staff has remained stable over the years with some of the teachers gaining considerable experience from their stay in the school. The above strengths can be geared towards attaining excellent academic performance.

However, despite the strengths, the institution has a share of challenges particularly in matters of discipline. The discipline data collected over the years indicate that learner’s discipline has deteriorated each year. Discipline is essential in ensuring that learners utilize the instructional time maximally thus excelling in academics. Also, the institution needs more teachers across the grades.
The institution has opportunities that can be utilized to shape and strengthen the school culture. For instance, the veteran teachers who have served under numerous administrations are crucial in the culture-shaping process. The years they have served in the school have equipped them with skills that can be useful to me in changing the school culture.
After analyzing the school using the SWOT analysis, I have realized that it is possible to change the school culture dynamically. First, I will engage the institution stakeholders so that we can lay down a strategic plan that will see us achieve our objectives. Among the stakeholders will be the veteran teachers who have served under various institution heads. The primary agenda will be coming up with ways through which students discipline can be improved. The School Improvement files and student’s discipline files will be the primary sources of crucial information in the school culture-shaping process.
