Smartphones increase our ability to communicate, widen the span of our social lives, and reduce the strain of traveling to gain new social experience. However, the reality of smartphones is alienation from a socially vibrant life to a life restrained on online platforms. Moreover, smartphones do ruin not only our social lives but also are a detriment to the economic and political freedoms (Pinder, 2015). In this regard, this paper elucidates the parts of our lives that have been ruined by smartphones while establishing the rational thoughts of other people within the society who hold that smartphones have fostered our sociological lives.

Thesis statement: Smartphones are some of the phenomenal inventions that human beings have witnessed in the 21st century, but their use is overwhelming our physical presence in our social lives. Indeed, smartphones have detached most of the current generation from the real world and predisposed them into a virtual world in which people rarely notice what is going on around them.

Background

Despite the fact that smartphones ruin our lives in different ways regardless of the age gap and sociological attribution, they also form the backbone of our daily undertakings and attain vast usage at home, at work, schools and recreational facilities. Indeed, smartphones support a wide array of social media platforms in which individuals can interact over vast distances while overlooking rather strenuous sociological hindrances present in the physical world (Cyprus & Blogcritics, 2017). Therefore, most of the individuals who embrace the use of smartphones attest to the evolutional attributes and incentives that technology provides.

However, smartphone use has long-term effects, which are embedded in our interactions through cell phones. Smartphones are becoming technologically advanced and competent by the day, hence making them usable in all spheres of lives (Pinder, 2015). For example, they are used to perform economic, sociological, and political functions. Therefore, their presence in every aspect of life is detrimental to the welfare of humanity. However, some scholars’ term smartphones as the modern age tools of interactions and human beings must embrace the new inclination of human interactions.

As mentioned earlier, smartphones create a tendency for people to ignore the world around them and concentrate more on the virtual world that they are attached to in the use of the internet. Holistically, the mainstream human interactions included a necessity for face-to-face interactions, which have been overtaken by the invention of smartphones (Cyprus & Blogcritics, 2017). Some people argue that there is no necessity for facial interactions because smartphones complement the modernistic social interactions in the world. Nevertheless, the real constraint is whether the continued smartphone interactions can aid in maintaining the sociological competence of human beings (Minton, 2014). Indeed, smartphones can provide amicable communication incentives, but the nature of interaction soon evokes a drive to seek physical interactions in the long run.

The detrimental attributes of smartphone use are evident in the way children are caught up in online social interactions or games that they ignore their parents. It must be noted here that parent-kid communications are essential for the correct sociological upbringing. However, the ignorance of parents in allowing their children to spend too much time on smartphones leads to the existence of sociological discourses in early and late adult lives of individuals. Some people even find it challenging to begin a simple sociological conversation. Moral erosion is also imminent in children, a drawback that may attain long-term effects (In Monson & In Reinbold, 2017). To this end, future generations will have low self-esteem, low moral standards, and humanity will be at stake. Additionally, the distractions from the physical world are the cause of accidents, as drivers engage their peers on online platforms.

It is evident that smartphones take up most of our designated free time while at the same time undermining the formality of operations at the workplace. Therefore, fundamental freedoms may be hampered without our knowledge because smartphones have become part of our daily lives, and it has become normal to get occasional disturbances. People usually need time off to rest, interact with families, and engage in some socioeconomic endeavors. However, in the wake of streamlined communication and a quick reach on the smartphones, bosses can exploit smartphones to ruin the ample time of their employees (Cyprus & Blogcritics, 2017). Thus, smartphones have become a binding tool for employees and workers thus restraining the sociological incentives of human beings. Therefore, humanity has created an overdependence on smartphones that is detrimental to their livelihoods.

Human beings dedicate a significant amount of time interacting with their phones instead of indulging in productive activities. Some can refute this fact by claiming that smartphones provide for their livelihoods. However, in the end, people realize the effects of smartphone use when sociological disorders crop up (Cyprus & Blogcritics, 2017). For instance, some people develop anxiety disorders and will continuously seek online social interactions or refrain from interactions completely. Similarly, other individuals feel the urge to stay in touch with their smartphones ignoring other essential life undertakings in the process (Pinder, 2015). In the long run, the time wasted reduces the aggregate production of human beings, and innovativeness is undermined. However, a major objection to the use of smartphones in our lives is the reliability convenience that they provide in making life easier for instance in conducting monetary transactions.

Conclusion

Smartphones are some of the phenomenal inventions that human beings have witnessed in the 21st century, but their use is overwhelming our physical presence in our social lives. Therefore, individuals should use smartphones moderately to reduce the negative effects, especially on the sociological aspect of life. Moreover, indulging in physical interactions is vital to counter the negative impacts of smartphone use.
