I relate best to the Social Cognitive Theory of learning. The Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), explains the impact of a person’s experiences, other people’s actions and factors in the environment on his behavior. This learning theory best guides my teaching in many ways. Learners always observe how the people around them behave. The Bobo doll experiment illustrates this (Walsh, 2013). Observational learning is usually guided by models, who are the people being observed in the society. Observing can make the learner imitate, reinforce or identify a certain behavior from the models (McLeod, 2016). SCT needs the availability of a role model to be imitated, for it to be effective. Therefore, as a teacher, STC will enable me consider my behavior when dealing with learners so that they cannot imitate nor adopt negative behavior during the learning process.
The Bible describes that we should not let other people capture us with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from their thinking and from the spiritual powers of the world, but rather from Christ (Colossians 2:8 NLT). Education learning theories can be approached from a Christian worldview in many ways. The Bible teaches on the good and bad behaviors in the society. It states on the forbidden and the reinforced actions that are needed for one to be a Christian or be a follower of Christ. Therefore, I believe that through the SCT provides stated findings ad ways through which people acquire such behaviors. The Bible however insists on one growing up with the expected intellectual values from the Bible. I would suggest that educational learning theories be approached with relevance to the Biblical teachings.
