Different institutions have adopted varying teaching models. There are some which have remained faithful to traditional models. On the other hand are institutions which are experimenting with novel and promising new models. Social emotional learning is among the new models which are redefining learning. As opposed to traditional models which place teachers at the center of learning, social emotional learning focuses on the needs of students. The importance of this learning approach cannot be overstated. The following outline highlights various aspects of social emotional learning. 

Social Emotional Learning and its Features

Essentially, social emotional learning is a teaching approach which leverages social relationships to enhance the impact of teaching (Vega, 2012). Furthermore, unlike other approaches which rather theoretical, social emotional learning aims to equip students with practical skills. There are a number of features that define social emotional learning. These are self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness (“Core SEL Competencies”, n.d). Other features that constitute this learning model are relationship skills and responsible decision making. What is evident from these features is that social emotional learning strives to enhance the social skills of learners. This learning model also aims to challenge learners to manage their emotions and solve the problems that they encounter.

Importance of Social Emotional Learning

Social emotional learning is important in a number of ways. One of its impacts is that it enables students to acquire conflict resolution and emotional management competencies (“Approaches”, n.d). This learning approach also inspires learners to embrace teamwork and collaboration. Furthermore, thanks to social emotional learning has been shown to build the confidence of learners while challenging them to become better listeners (“Approaches”, n.d). An improvement in the academic performance of learner is another positive impact that social emotional learning has been shown to have. Overall, social emotional learning bolsters academic performance while allowing learners to experience holistic development. 

Impact based Existing Research 

In the discussion above, the benefits that social emotional learning presents have been identified. The understanding that this learning approach is beneficial has been gained thanks to research. Research indicates that when they adopt social emotional learning, educational institutions safeguard the emotional health of learners and help to enhance their social skills (“SEL Impact”, n.d). Additionally, research has shown that the benefits of this learning method are not confined to young students. Even learners in advanced classes can enjoy these benefits. Cost improvements and the promotion of equity in education are other effects that social emotional learning has.   In conclusion, the benefits of social learning impact are as varied as they are numerous. This revolutionary approach to learning equips learners with social skills and provides them with opportunities for academic growth. Furthermore, the learning method also enhances equality and transforms learners into individuals who recognize the importance of teamwork and peaceful resolution of conflicts. Since social emotional learning has been shown to be beneficial, more educational institutions should adopt it.
