Introduction
The social welfare program selected is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). TANF is a joint federal-state cash assistance program for the low-income families with children. The State in coordination with the Federal government set aside funds every year for this program which is aimed at taking care of the welfare of low-income families with children (Zastrow, 2016). Since the major welfare reform in 1996, the federal spending on TANF has been fairly constant at $20 billion per year. Every year, slightly over 1.8 million families receive a monthly payment from TANF program. This has been helpful in helping the children from the low-income families who are accorded the opportunity to get better healthcare, better education while at the same time accessing basic needs.
Principles of Christianity
The role and principles of Christians are guided by the biblical principles regarding the poor. The bible specifies God’s revelation to people and how humans have responded to God. The bible as a whole supports the principles of what it means to be human and how humans should relate to God, to other people and the environment as a whole. Some of the key biblical records advocate for social welfare such as the value and dignity of humans and the need to share resources with the poor (Dunn, 2014). The earliest biblical records reveal the need to care for the poor by stating the relationship of humans with their God that portrays love and justice. Christians should, therefore, take part in the TANF program to help the low-income families improve their living standards. My interest in choosing this welfare reform is due to the role it plays in the lives of many low-income families. As Christians, we should have hearts to help the poor in the society so that they also live like us.
