Jesus is often defined as the Son of Man and the Son of God. These are the descriptions used to offer insight into his nature, mission, character, and ongoing ministry. Jesus is called The Son of Man because of various reasons. First, Jesus was conceived by the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, he had human parents, making him a human being (Piper, 2008). Secondly, Jesus called himself the Son of Man in different instances. He seldom called himself the Son of God. For example, in Mark 10:45, he says that the Son of Man came to serve and to offer his life as ransom for the rest of humanity, he himself emphasized the fact that he was a human being. Third, Jesus suffered on earth just like ordinary human beings. He was tempted by the devil, felt hungry, was accused falsely, crucified, and buried. Therefore, Jesus used the tile “Son of Man” to emphasize that he was human and it can be traced to the book of Daniel which says that the Son of Man will inherit the kingdom of god.

Jesus also portrayed characteristics that showed he was the Son of God. First, he was conceived by the Holy Spirit through the Virgin Mary. Joseph did not sleep with his wife so that Jesus could be born. This makes him The Son of God. Secondly, a dove emerged from heaven during his baptism and a voice declared that he was the Son of God. Jesus also performed various miracles including healing the sick and raising the dead (Piper, 2008). These acts can only be performed by someone with heavenly powers. Even the demons that he drove out from the possessed confirmed that Jesus was truly the Son of God as they came out from their victims. Lastly, the resurrection as ascension from the dead is the final acts that showed Jesus was truly the Son of God.
