The diversity of unions has increased over the years. Unions today are now composed of a greater number of women, Hispanics, Asian Pacific Americans, and more educated workers. The data also indicates a shift in unionized labor away from manufacturing and towards services. According to the study of major ethnic groups. Black workers had a higher union membership rate in 2017 at 12.6 percent, white workers had 10.6 percent, Asian had 8.9 percent, and Hispanic 9.3 percent of workers. Compared to the year 1983, the share of black workers has remained steady at 13 percent. However, Hispanics have gone up from 5.8 percent in 1983 and Asians have increased from 3.5 percent in 1983. The gap between the difference races has been narrowing from the year 1983 (Union Members Summary, 2018).

The union membership for men was 11.4 percent while for women was 10.0 percent in the year 2017. The gap between the rates of membership has been narrowing from the year 1983 which was at 24.7 percent for men and 14.6 percent for women. The decreased gap is an indication of increased diversity with the inclusion of more women in union membership.

The report shows larger diversity and larger demographic changes within the United States. The reason to such diversity can be attributed to demographic changes with an increase in the number of Hispanics and Asians in the United States. This leads to an increase in the number of workers of a specific race. The reasons for increased diversity can be also be attributed to drives by various organizations to enhance gender and race equality. The government has thus sought to increase diversity in union membership. Civil rights organizations have played a huge role by focusing on black workers in the Union sector (HR Magazine, 2000).
