Oral language is an essential skill for students to master because it is used for both academic and social success. Oral skills are used by students to interact with peers, make requests, receive new information as well as process and deliver instructions.

Team-building exercises can be used to help students develop oral and written communication. Other than helping establish routines, team-building activities also help establish routines and expectations as well as help the students feel comfortable. Not only does team team-building allow learners to work in groups but also gives them a chance to debate their opinions, take turns in speaking and work together towards achieving a common goal. Team-building will thus help students build rapport with each other thereby increasing spontaneous conversation.

Communication is not only about speaking but also about listening. Novice students listening skills can be developed by being requested to read part of a text aloud, and then having the entire class discuss and reflect on the content through active listening. Active listening means that the students will be listening to understand rather than reply by remaining neutral and non-judgmental. To build excellent listening skills, students will also be encouraged to practice asking questions in order to understand the intended message fully.

Films can be used as tools that model conversation skills among novice students. A conversation enables individuals to be able to share ideas, thoughts, opinions, and also receive then in turn. The elements of effective conversations include; body language, responding, paraphrasing, summarizing and eye contact. Novice students can be able to learn the foundational elements of a conversation by watching videos and films where these interactions are taking place. After watching the film or video, questions can be asked not only to help sharpen the students’ oral skills but also to help them think about what they have been watching and help absorb the information from the interactions and words in the film.

At the beginning of the course, ground rules are to be established, and as the instructor, I will explain the purpose that the rules serve. All the students will be encouraged to help build classroom rules as this will help generate more buy-in than just being told what they are allowed and not allowed to do. Discussions are going to be held with the students on what they believe should or should not be allowed in the classroom. Having this discussion will lead to a mutually-understood and -respected classroom expectations.

Through collaborative learning, students will be segmented into groups and asked to work on specific assignments and roles based on their strengths. Each group member will be assigned different tasks and then, as part of a group, be asked to share what they have learned for the purposes of achieving their common group objective. Collaborative learning allows students to interact and connect with each other. Collaborative learning encourages the building of relationships that help create a positive learning environment in the classroom.

Students are going to be encouraged to take initiative. Taking initiative will help promote a growth mindset as students will be allowed to work ahead and be tasked to deliver presentations on what they have learned as well as share their key take-away points in class. Students need to know that the teacher trust in their abilities and they can use their skills in solving problems in class. Students also need to know that when they fail, there will be no repercussions. When failure occurs, providing constructive feedback and a positive environment will help build the students’ confidence and encourage the willingness to try again as no one has ever succeeded without failing first.
