My topic lesson would be drug abuse and rehabilitation. This topic mainly focuses on the abuse of illicit drugs by college students and how rehabilitation can help in revamping the negative effects of drug abuse. This lesson is very important especially to college students because they are well familiar with the topic. College students commonly abuse illicit drugs (Nair et al., 2015). This was proven by research carried out in various colleges. My choice of topic was greatly influenced by the rapid increase of substance abuse in the colleges. The knowledge that my students will obtain from this lesson would lead to reduced use of illegal substances as the main learning outcome. This is because the topic will explain the negative side effects of drug abuse by the students; the topic will also encourage the students to seek rehabilitation and other forms of peer counseling to help reduce the use of drugs.
This topic is very familiar to me because of my experience as a peer counselor and also I have encountered many cases of drug abuse in colleges. In order to prepare an exceptional lesson topic for graduates, it was very important to acquire the needed working knowledge. In order to best deal with this problem especially among college students, the best approach is through peer counseling as a form of rehabilitation (Winberg et al., 2018). The cognitive behavioral therapy can also be best used to combat this problem among college students because it aims at making the students avoid the risk of exposure to the illegal drugs and in turn reduce the use of these drugs (Fogel & shlivko, 2016). This theory has always been successful when used to guide college students, as the main reason for substance abuse by college undergraduates is typical. This is mainly due to peer pressure and the continuous exposure to places or people who abuse such drugs around the learning institutions.
