Abstract
Technology has really reshaped the way almost everything is done within the society in the recent years. Compared to the 80s most things that we relate to, from home appliances to work-related projects, depend on technology (Education Week, 2016) . Education, security, finance and many other industries have integrated technological infrastructures in all aspects. The education sector has received different technologies to aid in enhancing the efficiency of the students, which include the use of projectors, classroom pc, smart boards, mobile phones, and tablets (Higgins & Katsipataki, 2012) . In this paper, we look into how technology has affected the education industry, the positive and negative impacts that it has made on education.
Positive impacts of technology in education
Research
Students used to depend on school libraries to accomplish their research goals. This was hectic because looking for answers and relevant information from big books was not that easy and was time wasting (Education Week, 2016) . Modern schools have invested in computer labs, which are well equipped with updated computer resources and internet connectivity. These computers are able to guide students in finding research results in online encyclopedias leading to faster deliveries with full in-depth information. Online encyclopedias such as Google scholar help in finding scholarly articles that are peer reviewed (Education Week, 2016) .

Globalization
Students all over the world can easily communicate and share ideas with teleconferencing technologies in computers. This technology promotes globalization in many schools in that students learn about other schools in other parts of the world without having to leave the classroom for such (Education Week, 2016) .
Educational games
Younger grade teachers expose the young students to computer-aided lesson such as learning spellings and sounds though letting them play some computer games instead of playing board games (Education Week, 2016) . Such initiatives make learning fun and encourage the students to pay attention in class while learning at the same time.
Distance education
Through technology, people have been able to apply for courses in universities overseas and have lessons from anywhere in the world without having to step into the physical classrooms (Kourville, 2011) . This is an improvement from how things were before computers and internet could be more developed. Such lessons are done at the convenience of the students without any external pressures.
Social networks
Technology has changed the way the teachers, management, and students interact through social media platforms. Students have formed WhatsApp and telegram groups where the most important information can be discussed through a broadcast (Muhtadi, 2016) . Students are able to receive important updates such as exam tables through this.
Negative impacts of technology on education
Declining writing skills
Computers have provided too many shortcuts and help when doing writing for example in Microsoft word (Education Week, 2016) . This has lead to a great negative impact on the writing skills of today’s younger generation, who mostly can’t spell simple words correctly.
Increased cheating cases
Technological developments such as smartwatches, Android phones are used by students during exams to engage in cheating leading to false grades.
Lack of focus
Text messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and snapchat are some of the latest things that take the most times for students (Education Week, 2016) . Instead of reading or revising or even concentrate in the classroom, they get busy on their phones chatting hence losing focus.
In conclusion, it is evident that technology has a very positive way of transforming the education sector. Although several negative impacts exits, teachers, school management and the government should invest more in technology to raise a technologically aware generation since the future is in technology, according to computer scientists (Kourville, 2011) .
