The Novel Would be Different if Narrated in Another Character’s Perspective
In the novel ‘Prayers for the Stolen’ written by Jennifer Clement, it is easy to notice that The author writes the novel through the main character's point of view, Ladydi; illustrating how beauty was related to the tragic situations happening in Guerrero. From a personal opinion, I think the novel would be much appealing if it were written in another narrator’s perspective. Unlike the first person perspective of narration, the third person point of view draws the reader in the story. However, it remains independent of the thoughts possessed by the characters as well as the feelings and experiences. For instance, it is evident that the narrator believed that Maria was advantaged for freedom because of her harelip. Reflecting on the story if each of the girls was granted a chance, a character like Paula would enlighten the tale by revealing and drawing the readers to a deep understanding of the human trafficking world. This is because she was able to return even though she was beautiful and most beautiful girls did not find their way back after being stolen.
In agreement with the classmate's response, the idea in the novel contrasts how society views beauty. From the story, beauty is regarded as a threat and instead being average seems to create an environment of freedom. Unlike the normal societal perception towards beauty, no individual can deny that a person is better off when he or she is good looking. In society, attractive people are advantaged since they are favoured almost in all settings. In work settings, they are paid higher salaries, and in learning institutions, beautiful students are regarded as smart students. They are judged differently from the average people, even when they are found guilty they are subjected to light punishments. This idea seems to be opposite with the perception of beauty in the novel as less attractive people have more freedom.
