By definition, personality refers to the combination of behavior, emotion, motivation, and thinking patterns that define a human being. The personality of an individual can be explained through four main perspectives which include humanistic, trait, social-cognitive, and psychodynamic. One of the resources that have helped me comprehend personality perspectives is an article titled The 4 Major Personality Perspectives, which was authored by Kendra Cherry and published on 1 st October 2019. Below are the insights from the resource.
The psychoanalytic personality perspective lays emphasis on early childhood experiences and the unconscious mind. Created by Sigmund Freud, this perspective of personality indicates that things hidden in the subconscious mind could be revealed through dreams, a slip of the tongue, and free association (Cherry, 2019). On the other hand, the humanistic perspective focusses on an individual’s psychological growth, free will, and personal awareness. Its major focus is on the nature of human beings and how each individual can achieve their potential. Major theorists of the human perspective are Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers.

Centered on identifying, describing, and measuring specific traits that make up human personality, the trait perspective seeks to understand how different individuals are. These include introversion, extroversion, and openness to experience among others. Theorists that have made major contributions in the trait perspective include Hans Eysenck, Raymond Cattell, Robert McCrae and Paul Costa (Cherry, 2019). The social-cognitive personality perspective emphasizes on observational learning, cognitive processes, and self-efficacy. Theorists such as Albert Bandura made great contributions be laying emphasis on believing in our own abilities.
The article has expounded on the four major personality perspectives giving a definition of each along with major theorists that have made major contributions. The resource has expounded my knowledge of personality perspectives and made it easy to review the various theorists and their contributions in the field of psychology.
