Facts

Motivation is ideally a concept of human behavior that predicates how an individual will function in response to a given stimuli. This is inspired by various elements namely: positive and negative reinforcers as well as an incentive. Besides this, there are two distinct forms of motivation: Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Besides, a number of theories exist in an attempt to explain the concept of motivation. One such theory is the drive-deduction theory; the other theory is the arousal theory, with the self-determination theory being another essential theory of motivation.

Analysis

A critical view into incentives reveals that it is an aspect which associates a behavior and the final outcome; it then offers motivation to lead to the desired outcome. This differs from the positive and negative reinforcers whereby if a contributive stimulus is eliminated in the latter there ends up being a lesser likelihood of a response being attained and in the former the reinforcer manages to intensify the behavior. Conversely, the two forms of motivation contrast owing to the fact that intrinsic motivation results from the desire to carry on a behavior owing to internal reinforcers whereas the same drive in extrinsic motivation results from external reinforcers. The various theories also differ in the sense that the instinct theory is concerned with attachment and also evolutionary forces influencing behavior whereas the drive-deduction theory is compelled by desire to fulfil biological necessities. Contrary to this, the arousal theory on the other hand, arises as a result of desire to gain a deep level of alertness. For instance, the latter theory explains why babies tend to engage in dangerous behavior.

Impact

The essence of motivation is such that it enables individuals to partake in various endeavors, regardless of whether they are perceived to be safe or dangerous. Motivation acts as a driving force that ensures that a particular action is undertaken regardless of the negative energy it is associated with.

Restatement

There is no doubt that motivation is an essential element contributing to the behavior of individuals. This element acts as a significant determinant on whether a person will engage in a particular activity or not. It is indeed a stimulus that drives people to do what they do. In most cases, it manages to produce a positive effect especially where success is attained in the long run. Positive reinforcers lead to desired outcomes. Alternatively, negative reinforcers if eliminated are not in a position to attain the expected outcome. The aforementioned theories of motivation are also very resourceful in explaining its significance and also offering a plausible explanation for the behaviors individuals engage in. It is hence appropriate to indicate that motivation is a critical element that determines how individuals will behave given a particular circumstance.
