Discussion 1 (Statuette of Amun)

Amun is commonly known as the creator. Many of the features such as the flat-topped crown represent his influence over others. The term symbol refers to something that means something else. The outer covering is made of gold which is a symbol of affluence and authority often associated with a superior being. Also, the scimitar on his right hand represents victory in war.

The Statuette also has a scimitar which has been held with the right hand. It was commonly used in warfare owing to its lightweight. This would serve to signify the fact that this is a god who had authority over all deities and could also serve to show that he was unstoppable. Also, the idea that he is standing with his left foot forward means that this is the center of life based on Egyptian ideology of the concept. Also as the creator, Amun would be expected to pose in such a manner to signify that he is the giver of life. He also appears to be thumping his chest which is typical of victory and power.

Discussion 2

The Olympic Games were initiated every four years in a bid to honor Zeus the Greek god. It was a crowded event that managed to attract a large number of individuals. Also, the sporting event incorporated running, discus-throwing and other activities. The equestrian events such as that depicted on the piece of art under review were, however, the most popular during the Olympics.

Some forms of aesthetics have been used in this image. This refers to materials used to make the image beautiful and pleasant. For instance, this can be observed on the horses which have some doted tags. It is use to signify affluence since only the wealthy individuals could afford maintenance costs for the horses that were to participate in the Olympics. It can also be observed that this is a four horse chariot contrary to the saddled horse since the former offers enough balance and a good grip when riding.

Discussion 3

There is a lot of abstruseness in this particular image. This is a situation whereby some elements are recognizable though not in a realistic form. It was sculptured in 360 B.C. It depicts an element of grief. The most elaborate feature is the manner in which the four unique carvings have been placed. This is one of the most noteworthy elements that has existed for the longest time.

One the image, the part on the left side is partially faded as a sign of someone who is absent from the rest. It appears as if this could be the daughter of the man and woman in the sculpture. It can also be observed that the latter individuals stare blankly ahead. This appears to be the matter such that they fail to note the presence of their daughter. One can depict grief and mourning of the individuals as they remember their deceased daughter. Besides, the child whose hand has been held by the mother appears unperturbed by what is happening. She is too young to understand the nature of events occurring at that time.

Discussion 4

During the ancient times, Camels were used to transport goods and people. This was the most common means in the Tang dynasty. This is a rare image created in a unique composition ; a situation where large images are organized in a particular work. The camel is stepping on what appears to be some form of antique soil without any form of enhancement from its original form.

The musicians appear to be enjoying themselves as they move seeking to entertain others. The one in the middle is standing upright, and it appears that he is the lead singer with the rest playing various musical instruments. The Camel in this particular sculpture stands with its head poised facing upwards. The beautiful lozenge clothing on its back is a depiction of the prosperity of these musicians. In addition to this, the camel also showcases strength and endurance having to bear the weight of five individuals on its back.

Assignment 3 (Rome and Byzantium)

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is one of the most splendid structures ever built. It was once one of the most prized possessions of the Roman Empire which managed to bring together both the religious and political spheres. It appears to be an Islamic relic from the outside though the interior reveals a lot of hidden meaning including the idea that it was once a Christian center.

There is a lot of applied art in Hagia Sophia. The most unique part of the building is the circular dome suspended at the center topmost part. It seems as if nothing is supporting this vault but a closer look shows two semi-circular domes suspended below it. In addition to this, there are 3 additional domes built below the semi-circular ones. Also, the dome has a lot of windows which bring in a lot of natural light. The marble adorned on the walls bearing beautiful patterns show how magnificent this edifice is. Further still, the dome has been erected on a square base which is quite bewildering.

Another distinctive feature is the walls which are specially decorated with what appears to be some assortment of gold elements. Other decorations involves the patterns which encompass natural objects such as palm leaves. Further still, the building idealizes all spectrums of life without necessarily concentrating on a single element such as religion. The distinctiveness of the marbles used on the interior surface of the building also depicts the fact that large sums of money must have been used to gather such marbles. This is an aspect of revetment which encompasses a situation where marbles are imbedded into the surface of the house.

In an age where elements such as tiles were not available, it is amazing that the developers managed to weave patterned surfaces with organized wavelike mechanisms which makes the interior to appear alluring. There are also images of people who appear to have some of the highest level of authority owing to the gold and silver ornaments and other wearables they have, which depict prosperity. The building is also old and this can be illustrated from the worn out structures such as walls and floors. It, however, still has its aesthetic beauty.

Assignment 4

Sculpture of Angkor Wat

This is deemed to be the oldest structure of religion created in a cultural style ; implying that it is from a large geographical region. It is also revealed that it had another name before it later on renamed to Angkor Wat. King Suryavarman II constructed this temple in 1113-1145/50 C.E.

Summary

The first intricate feature of the building is that it appears old and the exterior seems to be worn out. The meticulous structure also displays a number of images each of which seems to be telling a different tale on the Hindu religion. One such image is the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. There is a god who appears to be torn in between to antagonizing parties. It is as if he is trying to decide on who to support. In this case, the most dedicated of either party is likely to get his assistance. Also, the temple is surrounded by what seems to be a wall which is also a building. It separates the sanctuary from external surroundings, thus keeping any potential threat away from the inhabitants.

To further belabor on the above premise, there are 5 pillars which are symbolic of the mountain of the gods, Mt. Meru. It is the same place that was believed to connect the earth with the heavenly deities. In addition to this, Angkor Wat represents, religious and political elements based on the images on the walls of the building. The structure, nevertheless, exhibits elements of damage on the walls and roofs which are bound to continue unless something is done to prevent this. The temple is currently being used by the Buddhists who have been paying homage to this structure since the 15 th century. It serves the purpose of a religious monument where devoted believers come to worship and pray.
