Albert Bandura, in his social cognitive theories, postulates that learning, behavior acquisition, and cognitive experiences are primarily as a result of the influence of personal factors, the environment an individual grows in, and their behavior. This theory can be used to learn one of my best friends since high school. Being of African descent and an immigrant to the US exposed her to different environments and experiences, all of which had an impact on her development.

She is an individual who has been privileged in interacting with different people in different contexts. I learned that her observational learning capabilities are on a high level. In brainstorming sessions, she could easily observe an aspect in the environment, relate it to past experiences. With the two complementary elements, she could come up with a solution to a particular problem. Her self-efficacy is highly desirable. In coming up with solutions or even interacting with the environment, she is confident to a large extent. Reciprocal determinism is central to better understand her in and beyond class. At the same time, her capabilities in brainstorming and relating the different environmental influences to come up with a solution are evident.

One of the observations that I have made about my friend’s behavior is that it has been largely reinforced by her experiences in the US as well as her behavior. One of her desirable traits is the acceptance of all people, regardless of their differences. Her curiosity to obtain knowledge from different sources is a behavior that influences her to highly regard diversity and inclusion. Having partly grown up in the US and Africa also exposed her to environments where diversity is prevalent. Interacting with her made me understand that her expectations are that her exposure and experience with different people will make her a better person.
