Following the September 11 terrorist attack on United States soil, Lieutenant General Hughes explains in a statement that individual rights have to be abridged, and the societal conditions are to be changed from the normal values and traditions. For instance, police officers and security personnel are given rights to search any individual for contraband without probable cause or judicial findings. The United States is unable to handle and absorb terrorism circumstances leading to the changes in society. Therefore, to prevent these changes from happening, something needs to be done ahead of time by the people and government of the United States. According to Lieutenant General Hughes's statement, I agree that changes need to be made, which will affect American lives because when the police officers are given liberty to search any suspecting individual for contraband, it violates their rights to privacy without. However, the change has affected the satisfaction of human rights, the physical integrity of the victims, and liberty.

The main issue is the effect that terrorism has on individuals' lives because it clearly de-stabilizes the governments, endangers security and peace, affects the social and economic developments, and undermines civil society. According to Bouchard (2015), it is the government's fundamental responsibility to protect the citizens of the United States from domestic and international terrorism as their basic right to safety and security. In recent years, the United States has adopted measures to counter-terrorism, which have seriously challenged the rule of law and human rights in society. Therefore, many individuals encounter torture and other human rights violations from the police officers and security officers in the name of counter-terrorism. Also, there is disregard for regular and independent monitoring and investigations of individuals' private lives in detention centers that violate the human rights of individuals (Meggle et al., 2013). These human rights violations have changed the lives of many citizens in the United States by causing serious human rights abuse. Also, judicial independence has been undermined by the police officers who take matters in their own hands.

Therefore, the question of terrorism changing American lives in the United States is important because since the September 11 attacks, measures have been taken to address the conditions leading to terror attacks. Individuals need to understand the effect of terrorism and its relationship to human rights in society. In the context of counter-terrorism, relevant human rights doctrines such as private investigations have been violated, particularly in counter-terrorism (Amble, 2012). In conclusion, the society and the government of the United States should find the best method of countering terrorism without the violation of human rights to preclude the effects of terrorism and human rights.
