Face-to-face interviewing is one of the oldest and widely used methods of conducting primary research. Also, the answers from structured interviews lack details (Smith, 2012). Unstructured interviews are more flexible as questions can change depending on the respondent’s answers.
One the advantages of open-ended response are that it permits unlimited numbers of the possible question. In that light, the interview will have a wide range of information regarding that case study. Also, anticipated findings could be discovered in the process which would be beneficial to the research design. Lastly, they permit answers to complex issues.
One of the disadvantages of open-ended response is that different respondents give a different degree of details in answers. Also, in some cases, responses may be irrelevant or buried in useless details. Another disadvantage is that fact that answers take a lot of space in the questionnaire.
