Gun control is a topic of many controversies. In public gatherings, public media and social media platforms, the topic of gun control regulation are hitting the headlines. There are those who claim that strict regulation with regards to gun control is the best strategy to ensure that crimes due to gun possession reduce. Such people argue that with strict gun regulations, fewer people will own guns, and thus reduces the rate of gun-related crimes in the country. However, this is not the best way to reduce gun-related crimes. In my opinion, strict regulation on gun possession cannot reduce crimes that relate to guns usage.

First, regulations are made for the law abiding citizens not criminals. It implies that when law pertaining to gun control is stricter, more law-abiding citizens will not possess guns. However, the criminals will always find their way out. They can import guns from other countries or use malicious tactics such as stealing from a military institution. Secondly, strict laws on gun possession make the citizens more vulnerable to gun-related crimes. The citizens encounter the criminal first as the citizens need guns more than the police officers who encounter criminals after they have committed a crime. Further, a look at places where mass shooting takes place shows that they are places where gun are restricted such as churches. It means that criminals like the place where citizens are less armed. It further implies that laws that restrict citizens from possessing a gun to expose them to gun-related violence ( Devi, 2016). Lastly, such laws do not eliminate gun violence but reduce them. It implies that such problems will still exist even though such strict rules will be in place.

In summary, it is evident that when gun control regulations are in place, the citizens suffer more as they are exposed to criminals with the less self-defensive mechanism. It is also apparent that gun control regulations only reduce and cannot eliminate gun-related crimes. It is thus critical for the citizens to join hands in fighting such regulations that only acts as a danger to the innocent citizens.
