A criminal investigation is an important activity that the justice system uses to convict criminals. Investigators use numerous methods; these are the witness statements and interrogation and collection of evidence. A criminal investigation is, therefore, the application of applied science involving the study of facts used to identify and prove the guilt of the offender. The justice system heavily relies on the use of forensic science and its application to prove an act of crime. The consideration is that forensic science is typically used when there is no witness or investigators cannot interrogate victims. Forensic science is involved collecting physical evidence from the crime scene, mostly in drug-related crimes and sex crimes. The crime investigators will analyze the physical evidence like blood samples or weapons to determine the identity of the victim and the criminal by generating DNA samples or any other chemical samples in a crime laboratory. The result will be considered as evidence in a court (National Institute of Justice, 2017).

Technology is also important in the criminal investigation. First new technologies have created an added value in forensic science. Technology will, in the long run, improve the efficiency and accuracy of the forensic science technique. Technology is vital for the transfer of information and data between agencies on criminal offenses, the high dependency of computer and cellular technologies has increased the capacity of data processing and communication (Holt, 2013). The reliance on the social media by the majority of the population has helped the criminal investigators to find evidence of cyber-crimes by terrorist or con artists which are a pivot for the justice system to fairly judge a criminal offense. An example of technology used in a criminal investigation is the use of predictive analytics which uses the internet draw the connection of the criminals' patterns and activities to predict a crime threat.
