What are some important steps in interpreting data from high-stakes assessments?

There are several necessary steps to consider when dealing with data pertaining to high-stakes assessments. First, there is a need to establish outcomes that we expect and those that we don't anticipate. Then we get information about the data system either from the state or district assessment office. Thereafter, there is a need to ascertain which information is reported concerning the students with disabilities. After that, there is a need to determine if any additional information is required to understand student performance. For instance, the number of students that obtain accommodations and modifications.

What does the law say about the instruction and assessment of students with disabilities?

The law stipulates that organizations should report assessment results for all students, and this includes even those with disabilities. This means that new standards for different assessments must be developed by the state if they want to exclude students with disabilities. The law also states that students with disabilities are to be allowed the same instructional opportunities as their peers.

Why is it important that students with disabilities have access to the general education curriculum? What are some ways to help these students to access the general education curriculum?

The general education curriculum is full of experiences and skills that are very crucial to learners. As such, these opportunities must be provided to students with disabilities. It will equally help them later on in life. This access to the general education curriculum may be made easier by offering students with disabilities suitable accommodations and modifications.

What are accommodations? Modifications? Alternate assessments? When should each of these be used?

Accommodations are strategies aimed at removing learning barriers to ensure equal access to learning by every student. They should be used when there is a clear hindrance that might affect effective learning for some students. For instance, a student who is short-sighted should preferably seat in front of the class. Modifications entail strategies aimed at changing what a student is taught and what they are expected to do in class. Modifications should be used when there is a need to change delivery method, content, or instructions when teaching to make learning effective. An alternate assessment is a type of evaluation whose grading is not based on academic standards. This is always applicable where a learner cannot participate in the usual state assessment even with necessary accommodations.
