The usage of internet has in the past decade revolutionized the way people interact, communicate and most importantly how business is conducted. Many institutions, business and individuals have adapted the usage of internet to increase their global visibility trough online presence. The most popular way of maintaining online presence is by having a website that communicates your purpose to the outside world. Website designs vary depending on various aspects and the purpose they serve. This work seeks to analyze the visible variations between two news renowned news websites- The New York times ( https://www.nytimes.com/ ) and the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/international ). The criteria for this analysis will be based on the proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast.
Proximity
P roximity is the closeness of the items which forms a unit. In this case, it refers to how items posted on the website are packed closely together or far apart. Both websites are professionally designed with every item category named and collectively put together. These categories are placed immediately below the website’s name. For instance, for The New Yolk Times, categories contain news from; World, U.S, N.Y, Business, opinion and tech among others are visible. News items in each category are also well spaced within the website making it properly visible and easy to navigate. The Guardian also shows clearly marked categories under the website’s name namely; News, Opinion, Sport, Culture and More. However, news items within these categories are placed closer to each other than in The New York Times.

Alignment
Alignment is another contrast aspect important for this work. This refers on the arrangement of the items within the website. In this case, The New York Times’ website appears to be neatly arranged with visible columns containing various news items. On the other hand, the Guardian’s website has items of different sizes in dimensions making it to look complex.
Repetition
Repetition is the appearance of same thing more than once. In the news website, it could mean that the report or news tem s appearing multiple times. Many news website uses this aspect to ensure that the article reaches as many readers as possible. N our case, the new yolk times has an article appear more than once on its website. This case as not been witnessed on the Guardians’’ website.
Contrast
Contrast is how things differ. This is obvious that different entities would like to have a distinct website for their business. For that reason, the designs are made in such a way that they identifies with the company’ operations, as well as making it easy for the customers to navigate. For that reason, the two websites- the new yolk times and the Guardian- have many distinct aspects in them. First the Guardian as fewer news categories than The New Yolk Times. By having fewer categories, it means that they have put many categories together which may be closely related. This can be a disadvantage to the audience since they will have to peruse trough many items to reach to the intended one. Using many categories as seen on The New yolk Times’ website helps the audience to go straight to their intended categories hence reducing the search time.
In conclusion, the two websites may be serving the same purpose but the design and features are somehow different. The New Yolk Times seems to rank better in terms of content proximity against the Guardian. Alignments are also different in that the new yolk times have a more neat arrangement compared to the Guardian’s website. Only one article appears to be repeated on the new yolk times’ website as at the time of this analysis unlike the Guardian which has none. These and many other have been used to have the differences in the two news websites.
