The thesis by James Braveboy (2015) contains the six standard features of academic writing. The title of the thesis is “Worldwide Seaport Congestion”. The language used in the thesis is academic and follows the right punctuation and grammar. The author does not use first person in the thesis. The author does say “In my thesis” I will…Instead the author notes “This thesis will…” The thesis is also formatted well and has all the components of a research paper. It has an introduction, abstract, objectives, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. This is indicative of discipline in academic writing. In the literature review, James also acknowledge other authorities who have carried research on the same topic of seaport congestion. This is reflected by both the in text citations and the references. The author also has charts and graphs showing among others theories of labor and globalization. This pictorial use and use of charts is one of the features of academic writing. It helps the readers to understand and interpret information presented in the thesis/paper. In the thesis, James intends to provide a different perspection on how to handle the issue of seaport congestion. He seeks to offer a different angle of harmonizing the thinking between union leaders, shipping authorities, maritime associations and laborers and the large conglomerate ocean linear companies. He notes that congestion at the sea port is caused by conflicts amongst the various players. This is what the author authoritatively believes is the cause of congestion. He seeks to offer a solution to the same.
The article “An Evaluation of Early College High School Models and Traditional High Schools on Early College Readiness in English” by (Chapa, Kupczynski , Mundy, & Gibson, 2016) , attempts to find out if there is a difference in college readiness between Early College High School (ECHS) students, ECHS students within a traditional high school, and traditional high school students. The findings of this study aims at establishing the effectiveness of the Early College High School Initiative (ECHSI). This is the value these authors aim to achieve with this paper. They assume authority and go a step further to have the article peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Education and Social Policy. In the literature review, the authors acknowledge works done by other scholars on the same topic. Some of the authorities mentioned include Baer, Kutner and Sabatini (2009) and Chapa et al., 2014, p. 3. There are in text citations in the article and also a reference page. The authors do not use first person in the article and also follow the right format which includes an abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, discussion and conclusion. Proper grammar is also evident in the paper. In addition, the article also has tables which represent statistical interpretation of the findings of the comparison of the three groups of students.

Some learning points I found interesting is the need to adopt academic language when writing academic papers. This is a useful learning point which will be useful during thesis writing. I have also learnt on the need to acknowledge the works of other by having in text citations and a reference page of my work.
