The Christian bible is divided onto two main sections, namely the old testament and the new testament. The old testament is the first section that consists of thirty-nine books, while the new testament is the second section comprising twenty-seven books. The main content of the old testament is prophetic revelations, laws and Christian teaching. The new testament is a full fulfilment of was being forecasted in the old testament. The new testament has four gospel books, the acts of the Apostles and twenty-one epistles that were written by Paul (Butler, 2011). The last book is Revelation, that focuses on the end times. The greatest portion of the new testament does not talk about the teaching of Christ. Instead, the focus is on the consequences that humans will suffer is they go against the teaching provided in the old testament.
The old testament, on the other hand, is divided into four sections. The first section is the books of law, also referred to as Pentateuch or Tora, written by Moses. The books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. The second section consists of historical books such as Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, Kings and Chronicles. The key content of the section is the history of Israel's people (Butler, 2011). The third section is poetic books such as Job, Psalms and Ecclesiastes. The last section of the old testament is prophetic books such as Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. The section focuses on prophecies given to characters that are later accomplished on the new testament.
There are three main differences between the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Bible. The differences are evident in the arrangement of the books, the content and the number of books. The Jewish scriptures have a total of twenty-four books and divided into three sections. That is different from the Christian bible, with a total of sixty-six books divided into two sections (Butler, 2011). The text of the Jewish bible is written in Hebrew while the Christian Bible is written in ancient Greek. Also, in the Jewish bible, the book of "2 kings" is followed by Isaiah while in the Christian Bible, the book of "Chronicles" follows the book of "2 Kings." All Christian bibles have the same number of New Testament books but there is a variation in the number of old testament books. For instance, the Catholic Bible have a total forty six books in the Old Testament as compared to the Protestant Bible that has a total of thirty-nine books.
