The continuous usage of cigarette, whether abuse or addiction is harmful to our health.
Introduction
Even though Smoking might be legal, it causes irreversible health effects. Most smokers are reported to have started smoking during their teen years and have found it hard to quit. This recreational drug has been proved to kill approximately half of the long-term smokers compared to the average death rate encountered by non-smokers. Cigarettes sold in developing countries are reported to have a high tar content and are less likely to be filtered hence cases of high preventable deaths.
Position
The continuous usage of cigarette, whether abuse or addiction is harmful to the health. Tobacco is the only plant ever discovered to contain nicotine. Nicotine is proved to be dangerous and fatal addictive and psychoactive drug that leads to both physical and psychological dependency. Cigarettes are proved to contain over 4,000 chemicals that are harmful to the heart, liver and lungs. These substances lead to heart attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and strokes. Tobacco is as well associated with different kind of cancers including cancers of the larynx and mouth, lung cancer, cancer of the bladder and the pancreas.

Smoking is believed to control anxiety and tension. It allows smokers to remain calm. Research shows that, non-smokers, compared to smokers, are usually angry, frustrated and aggressive. Cigarette smoking has been assessed to prevent dreaded diseases like Alzheimer’s. medical practitioners have also associated smoking of cigarette with improved memory. Cigarette smoking has been proved to help in the brain functions and prevent diseases like schizophrenia. This is because nicotine contains antipsychotic and anxiolytic properties.
Rebuttal
The advantages of nicotine as a drug are yet to be established as reliable. Even though smokers are always calm and composed, they suffer from cigarette smoking addiction that may lead to post usage effects when stopped. Deprivation of cigarettes to smokers may result to mental illness. In addition, there is the risk of passive smoking that leads to equal death rates due to the unfiltered air.
Conclusion
the smoking of cigarettes is not only harmful to the health but also the environment and the economy. The addiction rate is high making it expensive. In addition, it is harmful to the environment especially with the amount of cigarette butts everywhere. The health risks associated with smoking affect both the smokers and non-smokers, making cigarette smoking harmful to the society at large.
