Elizabeth Stanton, together with Lucretia Mott, are notable American women activists who saw the need to address the rights and issues of oppressed women in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. They demanded the rights of women be upheld, since, women were also right-bearing individuals, who had the right to be acknowledged and respected by the society ( Stanton, 2019 ). Their insistence was that women be granted immediate admission to all the rights and privileges just like other citizens of the US—men are accorded. However, a concern raised is whether or not Stanton’s concerns on behalf of women have been considered.

Attainment of equality between women and men, to enhance elimination of any forms of discrimination against women are fundamental human rights that the US and the UN, in general, have considered as significant values. Women rights have been addressed since Stanton’s activism, and much progress has been made in addressing the essentials of individuals’ rights. The rights to lead healthy lives, to acquire knowledge, and to have access to resources needed to lead a standard life ( WomenRightsAreHR.pdf, 2020 ). However, significant gaps exist that have made the dream of attaining equality a difficult reality to achieve. For instance, women realities are constantly changing, with new significant manifestations of discrimination emerging regularly. Still, women are discriminated based on their age, ethnicity, religion, health status, education, and marital status. Though, we should recognize the progress made by significant groups such as the Millennium Development Goals. Through this initiative, gender equality and women empowerment are reforms being pushed to show the commitment that supports such a significant problem that affects the globe. Issues such as the promotion of education for the girl-child, eliminating gender disparities, and share of women based on wages of employment, indicate a benchmark to fight for women’s rights particularly in the 21 st Century ( WomenRightsAreHR.pdf, 2020 ). Unfortunately, critical issues such as violence against women and other discriminatory laws are still realities facing society, even presently.
