The Documentary Hypothesis written by Julius Wellhousen goes against the Mosaic Authorship of the Pentateuch. Moses is said to be the author of the Torah, but according to Wellhausen, the Torah came from four different sources (Cassuto, n. d). The J-source where the author used the name YHWH for God, the E-source that uses the name Elohim to refer to God, the P-source that was so much concerned with the stories of relevance to priests and laws finally the D-source that dominates the book of Deuteronomy. These four sources show a doubt in the authorship of the Pentateuch.

The priestly redactors of the Torah such as Ezra compiled the whole work without omitting the contradictions that arose from the repeated biblical stories. For instance, the 1stand the 2ndcreation accounts contradict, in the first account, God creates by word while in the second account God works, the same applies to the story of Noah and Abram. These contradictions could not be edited by the priestly redactors because they believed the authors varied, each author had their own traditions, had come from different places and also different backgrounds. Also, the authors had different experiences and existed at different times in history. The redactors were unable to identify the sources that had the exact and right information too.
