Children with learning disabilities experience a lot of marginalization and exclusion in their communities. In most cases, they are frequently effectively striped of their rights. They are vulnerable to challenges like community misconceptions and stigmas, hunger, inferiority complex, lack of effective participation and school-related challenges.
The big idea in the Fat City video is how people living with disabilities are struggling. They are undergoing frustration, anxiety, and tension. This workshop and video gives parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers and siblings the opportunity understanding the emotions and stresses the children with disabilities experience daily. This ends up affecting their general performance in class. Therefore, those with learning disabilities in most occasions are not able to get the correct answers. For instance, when we start accepting the answer “I don’t know” from these children, we are encouraging them to give up (Clearwaters, 2018). They begin to hide and have that notion that “if I can’t see the teacher, the teacher can’t see me.” It is evident that if these children do not get recognition or positive support when they do something right, then they will not be willing to take up the risk again. These children are can also be affected by perceptual problems which have an impact on their behavior.

Equity has been highlighted here; it needs to be used more than equal. Children need to receive an equitable education. In most cases, learners have access to the program, but they learn it in different ways and are successful in their learning in different ways too. Teachers need to go out of their comfort zones and try and discover the best way of learning for their students. It is important to see and experience the authentic students living with disabilities face in their daily lives. For instance, in the video when Richard Lavoie says, “You have been living with LD for 10 minutes, or 30 minutes or 1 hour,” he was addressing the level of frustration the adults were facing.
From the video, there are some takeaway messages from different sections. Different People can take up the information from the film and use it in their daily tasks. For example, the “Risk Taking” section teaches people how students with learning disabilities like reassurance and not surprises.
