Historically, there have been various disasters, both natural and physical, that has impacted the different factions of the populations. The popularity and the seriousness of the disaster are impacted by the number of deaths and the economic impact resulting from the disasters. As the efforts are being made to prepare for such disasters in the future, analyzing the details that surrounded these disasters is of crucial importance. The paper will discuss the divergence in responses from the survivors of the earthquake. The social, economic and cultural impact of the disaster on disaster recovery efforts will also be debated. An assessment on whether recovery principles can be applied will also be done.
The Haiti earthquake that took place on 12 January 2010 in the West Indian Island impacting such countries as Haiti and the Dominican Republic resulted in the death of over 300,000 individuals with millions left homeless (Svistova & Francis, 2018). The 7.0 magnitude earthquake impacted all the aspects of the country including social, economic, cultural and other social factions. There has been the divergence in the opinions and views of the survivors regarding the response to the earthquake. Some of the survivors interviewed by Guardian expressed their gratitude for surviving the disaster whereas expressing gratitude to the responders providing them with assistance (Farmer, 2012). Other expressed their sadness and fear in the response indicating that vast proportions of the relief funds are being spent on maintaining the responders by providing hotel rooms and renting land whereas leading to increased food prices (Farmer, 2012).

The Haiti earthquake impacted the Haitian society across all aspects ranging from social, economic and cultural. One social impact is that it destroyed critical infrastructures in the country, an element that frustrated the recovery efforts (Farmer, 2012). The destruction of the hospital has made access to care challenges making it challenging to improve the population health. The destruction of significant government facilities including the policing department has made it challenging to ensure law and order, and that resulted in increased looting, abuse, rape cases and human trafficking (Svistova & Francis, 2018). Increase cases of lawlessness made a recovery difficult. Destruction of buildings, companies and farms increased the unemployment rate, therefore, halting recovery.
The disaster recovery principles can be applied to the Haiti earthquake disaster to fasten the recovery process. These principles would have directed efforts on the survivors, help in understanding the threats faced and conducting an analysis to ensure it is effective (Svistova & Francis, 2018).
