The history of the African Americans is one that is filled with both difficulties and joyful moments. One of the joyful moments that African Americans experienced was the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a social, artistic, and cultural movement that took place in the early 1900s. It was centered within the Harlem neighborhood in New York City. Many African Americans had migrated from the rural South to the North and Harlem became one of the main reasons for the migration. The Harlem Renaissance was referred to by different names such as the New Negro movement and the New Negro Renaissance. It was a literary movement that was associated to the development of African Americans works of art such as art, theater, politics, music, writers, and poets 

The Harlem Renaissance was a new era for Blacks where they were able to publish their music, visual arts, and writings in New York City. Many people thus gained more interest in the black culture and it was even appealing to the white population that would travel to New York City so as to embrace and have an experience with the culture of the blacks. This resulted in a cultural tourism and the relationship between black artists and white artists improved. The movement thus resulted in an increased appreciation for art by African Americans leading to a further rise in new writers, powerful musicians, and greater thinkers.

Many famous African American writers gained recognition throughout this time. Between the 1920s and 1930s, there were many things that came about such as poetry, jazz and blues music, musical theater, and dance. The Harlem Renaissance was a significant step and accomplishment for African Americans as it was the first time when critics and publishers took the writers seriously. It was thus a turning point for the black cultural history and African Americans were able to gain control over the representation of the black culture and experience. They thus had a place in the Western culture that had previously been unreachable.
