The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a poem that describes the consciousness of a modern man. Moreover, it addresses a man who would like to have a relationship but would not approach the woman. Its title is, however, ironic since it is a poem and not a song. The poem has various objects, situations and events that evoke emotions.

Prufrock uses objects, situations and events to evoke emotions. He describes how he sat patiently etherized upon a table. Moreover, he offers idealizes the room as one bearing women who talk of Michelangelo to show the readers how sophisticated they were. This reflects his state of helplessness, self-pity and self-disgust. He also talks about how thin his arms and legs are. He is further worried about what people would think of him as conscious of his bald head and his age.

Prufrock’s reverie on the fog reminded him of imaginary actions not related to the real world. When he says that there will be a time he is focused on what he was about to do. Eliot has exaggerated Prufrock’s emotional state to those of murderers. In addition, the imagery displayed by the dying voices shows how difficult it for him to make social conversations. When he asks if he should presume, it indicated conflict between his desire for a woman’s embrace and his doubts.

Eliot has used metaphor to describe Prufrock’s state. Prufrock feels insignificant as a bug pinned for examination. It generally describes a feeling of helplessness and unable to respond to human interactions. Moreover, the imagery presented by the crab shows his primitive nature and his inability to go anywhere. Finally, the phrase stating that they drown brings him back from the romantic world to the plain reality.

In conclusion, Prufrock is a coward who could not approach women. He was further disturbed by his looks and he generally felt helpless. Moreover, different imagery has been used to describe his emotional state. Finally, his low self-esteem has denied him a chance to have a woman.
