In the text Lunar Chronicles, there emerges a recurring theme of conflict between Queen Levana and Prince Kai towards the control of the latter citizens. The power struggles unfold as part of Queen Levana’s scheme to ensure that she wins over the support of the members of the court contrary to the wishes of the young Prince. Albeit these power plays and clashes between them, they maintain a firm of relationship that ensures that they maintain communication throughout the chapters (21-28). Indeed, while the Queen counts on her charm, physical strength, prowess in speech, and more importantly the cure that she possesses develops Letumosis disease, Prince Kai relies on his authority and the loyalty of his people towards helping to maintain his rule.
Queen Levana relies on multiple strengths that she possesses to try and win over the people of Prince Kai court including the use of the antidote that scientists among her people have developed to cure the disease that plague citizens. In doing so, she seeks to win not just the favor of the prince but also that of his people. In addition, she utilizes acts of mercy and her charm to win their support despite having a motive to gain their favor. At the beginning of chapter 23, she deviously presents the medicine as a gift for the Prince but at the same attaches some conditions that must be met. Notably, she requests that the Prince approves adequate compensation for her people in return for the antidote. She claims that it is only fair that she receives the compensation as a token of appreciation for the resources and efforts that her people have sacrificed to ensure that they develop the cure. Addressing the young Prince, she says, “That vial is your gift. I hope you will find it helpful, young prince. I believe it is in both of our interests to rid your planet of this disease. My scientists could have thousands of dosages prepared by month’s end. However, such an undertaking, coupled with six years’ worth of work and resources, has put quite a strain on my own country, and so I’m sure you’ll understand the need for compensation.” (Meyer, 2016, p. 224). In doing so, the Queen is evidently arm twisting Prince Kai to ensure that he meets her demands in the negotiation. In preceding events, she also uses her charm to try and show the members of the court that she is not monstrous towards them. She shows the servant who wronged her by stealing her mirror mercy.

For Prince Kai, he relies on the loyalty of his subjects such as Torin and the servants to maintain control of his court. He constantly consults with Torin and the android on the way to handle the clash between him and the Queen. Also, the expression of happiness upon the return of Nansi is an indication of his admiration for the court member. Unlike his relations with the Queen, members of his court depict a certain degree of loyalty towards the Prince, a factor that he counts on even as the Queen schemes to win over the members of the court and undermine his rule. Through this loyalty, even after the death of the Emperor, the Prince has maintained the peace even though he is yet to be crowned Emperor.
In summation, the relationship between Prince Kai and the court is characterized by some degree of loyalty, trust, and devotion, tools which help him to maintain control of his court despite Queen Levana’s scheme to undermine his authority at the court. The eventuality of the feud between the two leaders is likely to end in a compromise. In more precise terms, Prince Kai will likely offer the Queen and her people the compensation that she seeks.
