Having undergone the various aspects and stages of writing, it is interesting to observe how much knowledge about writing I have gained, and how that has shaped my writing techniques from an amateur to a more competent writer, I would say. Throughout the course, there have been challenges to my writing career, but these have helped redefine my angle of writing, by overcoming each challenge. I have grown wiser and more informed, not only about the various forms of writing, but also of the techniques to use to increase the quality of my work, its readability, and how to incorporate various pieces of evidence to build on its logical arguments. What I found most challenging, however, is the topic inventory aspect. It is quite cumbersome coming up with topics that capture the information of the research paper in as little words as possible while managing to attract the attention of the reader.
The easiest part I would say was the argument composition aspect. This is because it is much easier to structure the paper according to the general ideas, that is, using topic sentences, although even with this approach I still had issues structuring the body paragraphs. The tutor throughout the course insisted on structuring the body paragraphs in 5-7 sentences capturing the main ideas, their illustrations, evidence supporting the argument, and elaboration of the said evidence. This can be quite a challenging concept to grasp at first, although once I got the hang of it, it became much easier to move forward in my subsequent writings. Generally speaking, I have learned that academic writing is more than just noting down ideas with corresponding pieces of evidence, but rather takes on a more holistic approach that focuses on sentence structures, sentence composition and the coherency of argument. Having learned all this, I would like to advise other students to be patient in these studies to gain as much knowledge as they can, and do frequent practices to perfect their art.
