Core values represent vital personal or organizational beliefs. They are guidelines or principles that help a person or organization comprehend right and wrong. Core values are essential aspects of an individual's life and help determine if one is on the best track and towards fulfilling a goal(s). Lu (2019) asserted that outlined belief and principles help an individual or organization establish a steady path towards a holistic living or their goals and ambitions. Examples of individual values include faith in God, belief in living an honest life, and belief in family. Organizational core values include integrity, leadership, and commitment to customers, among others. Core values are the essential values of an individual, a company, an organization, or a country, and they provide the appropriate framework of decision making and engagement with others in addition to living a quality life.

Origin of Core Values

Core values originated from the value system. Values represent the level of significance of an issue or action and aim at getting on how best to undertake a decision in the best way possible. The ideal aspect of taking the right choice arose from the philosophy of normative ethics that focused more on ethical studies. It is a concept founded within philosophy ethics and examines the queries that stand out when analyzing the best course of action, morally (Lu, 2019). Normative ethics, from which various aspects of core values arose, is concerned with the wrongness and rightness of activities and helps one establish the appropriate way of life that is desirable and in line with ethical values ( Glauner, 2017) . Over the years, individuals, organizations, and institutions have focused on promoting and enhancing moral values in their lives and engagements.

Role of Core Values

Core values play an essential role in society ( Glauner, 2017) . Besides helping individuals and organizations align their actions and decisions with ethical standards, core values help build a formidable character, remain determined and passionate about important issues, and help individuals pursue learning and growth. Core values are essential pointers towards supporting individual or company culture, shape, vision, or culture ( Pawar & Midgley, 2017) . They are the flag posts of an organization's identity, and above all else, core values educate others about an individual or company on what they stand for morally.

As an aspiring leader, I am keen on enhancing, building, and fortifying core values that will help me develop positive and practical skills of management. My core values include integrity, communication, and vision.

Integrity

The word "integrity" arose from the word integer denoting to a whole or complete. As an adjective, it meant wholeness derived from individual qualities such as consistency and honesty. Integrity means a firm devotion to artistic or moral values. McGehee, Germer, & Neff (2017) argued that within a social setting, integrity means being sensitive and accountable to others and maintaining a personal awareness of doing the right thing. As a future leader, I always aspire to maintain a strictly moral life. I have always maintained knowledge of upholding a noble character, supporting what is right, and adhering to established rules. My principle towards all my engagements and relations is to put on integrity and uphold all ethical values. It includes remaining accountable to all my decisions and actions. Through this, I believe I can build a sense of respect and trust from my colleagues and followers.

Communication

I believe that relations and performance are done best if people communicate and understand issues. Without a clear understanding, it isn't straightforward to build trust, listen to one another, support one another, respect, and even trust one another ( Glauner, 2017) . As a future leader, I believe that a leader should be open to various ideas and concerns to get the best out of followers. Without communications also, it is challenging to build strong positive relations ( McGehee, Germer, & Neff, 2017) . Through communication, which can take the form of non-verbal or verbal, I can sell my ideas, pass on critical information, and connect with others. It is the only way in life that I will be able to achieve my dreams; by connecting with others.

Vision

Any student, leader, parent, manager, entrepreneur, or farmer, vision is everything. Working towards my dreams and aspirations is a way of maintaining purpose towards my engagements. In everything I do, my studies, and my career path, I already has a mental image of what I want in the future. My vision always comprises of the ideal life or situation I want. I cherish the core value of vision as it gives me the motivation to pursue my dreams to live the life I desire, which is founded on my idea of the future. My vision is what I want to accomplish in the near future. For example, ten years from now, my vision is to establish a freight company, shipping goods from one country to another. The freight company is the ideal image of my future, and in it is my vision. At a personal level, vision is everything. It helps me set in motion my future endeavors, my future life. At the same time, it helps me align my priorities with my actions, ensuring that in all my efforts, I am focused on a distinct point.

Conclusion

Core values are the principle pointers of an individual, a company, an organization, or a country. They provide the necessary framework of engagement and decision making in addition to forming an identity of the company or individual. Core values are fundamental at an individual level or company level. In addition to helping an organization strive for an ideal culture and identity, it helps one work towards a single focus. It is an essential way of not only aspiring ones' goals and dreams but also how to relate positively with others. My core values mainly include integrity, communication, and vision. Through these, I believe I will establish the appropriate, desirable characters for my ideal life now and in the future.
