One core aspect characterizing freedom is the ability of an individual to make independent choices. Such choices can be made with regard to the expenditure of money and the appropriate way of leading life. Even though freedom can per perceived as a natural expectation, there are some territories where freedom is hugely inhibited. In most cases, this is reflected in the manner in which individuals are denied the right to live their lives in a way they deem fit. Having lived in Cuba for the considerable part of my life, I can explicitly point out the essence of freedom in personal wellbeing. Unlike the natural expectation where individuals can express and carry themselves around freely, there are very limited spaces of freedom in Cuba. During my stay there, I realized that Cuba had rarified laws limiting the freedom. This implies that the state micromanages a majority of citizens in terms of their movement, assembly, association, and expression. Even though the international communities have raised concerns regarding the curtailing of freedom in Cuba, the reality is that the Cuban government has successfully exerted its control on the freedom of its citizens, a phenomenon that has been facilitated by the existing harsh penal code. In one incident when I had not internalized the absence of freedom in Cuba, I found myself on the receiving end of the Cuban authorities due to the personal opinion that I had expressed on Twitter criticizing the reluctance of the government to embrace a free society. This was the most traumatizing expressed considering that the authorities threatened to deport me in the pretext that I was a threat to the national security.
Despite my younger age during that incident, I deciphered that unlike my home country where freedom of expression, association, assembly, and movement was highly embraced, Cuba was a different territory of its own. It was even intriguing that a majority of mutual friends I encountered during my stay there feared to criticize the government in one way or another even in clear circumstances depicting the blatant disregard of basic human rights by the Cuban authorities. At a personal level, this was extreme since I have been brought up and socialized in a society that embraces free expression of thoughts and ideas. In this regard, the highly curtailed freedom is the principal reason as to why I did not enjoy my stay in Cuba. It was a very difficult experience since the established system demanded that no contrary opinions and expressions were to be entertained against the government. Considering that I had not been used to turning a blind eye to social evils perpetrated by the Cuban authorities through the limitation of freedom, I experienced intense personal conflicts upon the realization that curtailed freedom was the way of life in Cuba. I believe and embrace living in a free society. In this case, personal opinions regarding various political and social issues can be expressed without fear of being intimidated or gagged.
